The best letter from Santa arrives at just the right moment: early enough to be read a dozen times, late enough to feel like part of Christmas. Here are the elves’ favorite days for a letter to appear, when children should send their own letters to Santa, and the 2026 dates for having a letter from Santa mailed.

2026 dates for letters from Santa

Mailed letters usually go to print within about one business day of receiving your child’s details, or, if you choose a “deliver around” date on the details form, the elves hold the letter and mail it so it arrives in the days just before that date. Delivery times are set by the mail carrier and are often slower in December.

The best times for a letter from Santa to arrive

  1. Idea 1: December 1: kick off the season

A letter waiting on the first day of December sets the tone for the whole month, especially alongside an Advent calendar. Children have weeks to reread it and write back.

  2. Idea 2: The first snowy weekend

A slow weekend morning, pajamas, cocoa and a letter in the mailbox. If snow isn’t on the forecast, any lazy Saturday works.

  3. Idea 3: Mid-December: the sweet spot

Between about December 8 and 18, excitement is building but there’s still time for replies, cookie planning and telling every grandparent.

  4. Idea 4: After a big moment

A school concert, a lost tooth or a first sleepover. If you order soon afterward, Santa can mention it, and the letter feels wonderfully up to date.

  5. Idea 5: The week before Christmas

The countdown is on. A letter now is pure anticipation, and it’s a good time to promise that the reindeer are ready.

  6. Idea 6: Christmas Eve

Too late for the mail, but perfect for a printable letter propped against the cookie plate or tucked under the tree for morning.

When should kids write their letters to Santa?

Late November to early December is the classic time. It gives children a few weeks to think about their wish (and change their minds twice), and it leaves time for Santa’s reply to arrive before Christmas. Many families make it an event: the first weekend after Thanksgiving, with cocoa, crayons and a list of the year’s proudest moments.

  • Help little ones draw their wish if they can’t write it yet.
  • Ask them to tell Santa one thing they’re proud of, not only what they’d like.
  • “Send” it from the windowsill, the mantel or the mailbox, for the elves to collect overnight.
  • Quietly keep a copy (or a photo) so Santa’s reply can mention what they wrote.

A simple plan, working back from Christmas

  1. Pick the moment. Decide when you’d like the letter to be found: December 1, a snowy weekend or the week before Christmas.
  2. Collect three real details. Your child’s town, a friend or pet, and one thing they did this year. Our Santa letter ideas can help.
  3. Order with time to spare. Order a mailed letter any time now (choose a “deliver around” date if you’d like it to arrive closer to Christmas), and no later than December 8 for a guaranteed Christmas arrival.
  4. Missed the mail? A printable letter can be ready the same evening. See how to make a letter from Santa look real when you print it.

Questions about timing

When is the last day to order a mailed letter from Santa for Christmas 2026?

Order a mailed letter or keepsake bundle by Tuesday, December 8, 2026 for guaranteed arrival before Christmas at a US address. We keep mailing through Saturday, December 12. Most of those letters still arrive in time, but delivery after December 8 can’t be guaranteed.

Is it ever too late for a letter from Santa?

No. Printable letters are available right through Christmas Eve. They’re emailed to you as a PDF, with a Nice List certificate, to print at home.

If I order early, will the letter arrive early?

Yes. Choose “as soon as possible” and a mailed letter usually goes to print within about one business day of receiving your child’s details, then travels by regular mail. Ordering early? Choose a “deliver around” date (around December 1, 8 or 15) and the elves will hold your letter so it arrives closer to Christmas. Order by December 8 to be safe.

How long does a mailed letter take to arrive?

It depends on the mail carrier and your location, and December mail is often slower than usual. That’s why December 8 is our guaranteed order-by date for arrival before Christmas.

Do you mail letters from Santa outside the United States?

Not this season. Mailed letters go to US addresses only. Printable letters work anywhere in the world.
